CONSERVATION TIPS FOR ARTWORKS ON PAPER

When you acquire artworks on paper, you need to take some measures to maintain the durability, integrity, and preservation of the object’s original features.

Here are some tips to better preserve and exhibit artworks on paper:

When framing it, avoid the direct contact between paper and glass. This can change the original characteristics of the drawing/painting/engraving/print.

For traditional frames, use a mat with a thickness between 1 and 2mm, at least, avoiding the direct contact of artwork with glass. Or use box frame, because it maintains a safe distance between the glass and the artwork.

Use acid-free papers and adhesives (with neutral pH) to be in contact with the artwork. The acid, over time, can change the original characteristics of the material, creating stains or yellowing the paper.

Avoid using MDF at the bottom of the frame. They can absorb moisture and promote the proliferation of fungi, staining the paper.

Use foam board for the bottom of the frame. The material is lighter, covered on both sides with paper or plastic and the core is a thin hard foam, composed of PVC.

Do not use traditional anti-reflective glass. They have an unpleasant texture that makes it difficult to see the details of the artwork.

Avoid exposing the artwork to direct sunlight. Intense lighting can decrease the permanence of tones and the original colors may fade away.

Use specific lamps (attention to voltage and luminous) as spotlights to artworks. LED bulbs are ideal because they don’t emit UV (ultraviolet) and infrared rays and have low heat emission. When handling the work, use fabric gloves, because the sweat and oil of the skin can stain the paper.

In case of archiving, store the work in a dark and dry place.

THE ART OBJECT IS AN INVESTMENT THAT REQUIRES CARE TO MAINTAIN ITS ORIGINAL INTEGRITY.
